WHO IS MS. HIGHTOWER?
Greetings! I am Deidre Dumas Hightower. I will serve as the 7th Grade Counselor for 2024-2025. I am a Greensboro native. I am excited about beginning my 23rd year as a Professional School Counselor. Prior to being a counselor, I taught second grade at Summerfield Elementary for five years. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education(K-6) from NC A&T State University and my Master of Science degree in Counselor Education (K-12) also from NC A&T State University (AGGIE PRIDE). I enjoy my work as a Professional School Counselor because I try to make a positive impact on each life I encounter!

*** PowerSchool maintenance weekend begins 2/21, online registration is due tomorrow. The signed paper registration form is due to your child's homeroom teacher no later than 2/24/25.
 
New Course Alert: Exploring Careers and Employment is replacing Financial Literacy! If you want this class, please write it in on your registration form.
Digital Art is not listed online, please use the paper copy to select this option.

Rising 8th Grade Registration:

Registration begins on February 14th at 5 PM until February 21st(due to Powerschool maintenance beginning on 2/21) for parents and students. 

Ms. Hightower will meet with students

February 24th-March 28th to review selections.

* Math 1-Strong A/B students with high EOG and NWEA scores

* Math 2 (Only for students that have successfully completed Math 1 in 7th Grade)

PE/HEALTH

*PE/Health/CPR-This course provides students with information and skills that enable them to solve problems and make decisions. It focuses on helping students understand the importance of health risks for their age group. In addition, lifetime physical activity and fitness are emphasized. Students will also be taught the Heimlich maneuver and pass the skills test of CPR (a graduation requirement).

Encore Course Descriptions

(ARTS Education)

*Band 8 (Yearlong) This class is open to students with previous band experience and involves a more advanced study of music, concepts and literature.

Orchestra 8 (Yearlong) This course is open to students with previous string experience and involves a more advanced study of music, concepts and literature. 

*Chorus 8(Yearlong) This course is open to all interested eighth graders. Students begin a more in-depth study of vocal technique and choral literature.

* Advanced Art 8 (Yearlong) This course is for 8th grade students who have a strong interest in art and involves a more extensive understanding of the elements and principles of design. (This is a more advanced course)

* Art 8 Traditional or Digital (semester) This course is open to all interested 8th grade students. The major focus will be on individual exploratory involvement. 

(Career and Technical Education)

*Exploring Technological Systems 8 -This middle school course focuses on students’ understanding of how technological systems work together to solve problems and foster innovation.

*Exploring Aviation Technology 8-The course focuses on aeronautical careers, including but not limited to pilot, engineer, airframe and power plant (A&P) technician, avionics technician and flight service.

*Exploring Business & Entrepreneurship 8 –This course will introduce students to the basics of business, marketing and entrepreneurship. Throughout the course, students gain awareness of career opportunities, and practice completing business tasks.

 *Exploring Financial Literacy 8 (Course has been changed to Exploring Careers and Employment)

*Computer Science Discoveries III- Only available to students that have successfully completed CS II in 7th.  The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS and data. 

(World Language)

*Spanish IB- Only available to students that have successfully completed Spanish IA in 7th. Students will continue the acquisition of language skills and further understanding of Spanish-speaking culture and civilization.
